Mayor’s Breakfast Series - Upsiding the Arts
Date: Oct 19, 2015
On Tuesday Morning, the Allentown Chamber of Commerce hosted the mayor and many local businesses owners and artists for a dialogue focused on bringing the arts to downtown Allentown.
This installment of the Mayor’s Breakfast Series was led primarily by Upside Allentown – an organization whose primary focus is “Supporting the Rise and Revitalization of Downtown Allentown” by splitting the new district into five distinct neighborhoods in order to highlight the strength and diversity of the city. Their latest mission is to create a “culture plan” to revitalize the arts downtown.
Among the topics discussed were the preliminary plans for “upsiding” the arts in the new district. So far, Upside Allentown has taken their mission to the streets, schools, and businesses of Allentown. They are utilizing a “vision wall” that allows residents and students to express what they believe is the current state of arts in Allentown, as well as what they wish to see in the future.
So far, words such as “diversity” and “accessibility” have come up often from the community. Participants emphasize locations such as Miller Symphony Hall and the Allentown Art Museum, but say they lack knowledge of the programs and exhibits these places have to offer the community.
Some of the solutions discussed involve creating a centralized, artistic vision for Allentown that would lead to one single place for everyone to receive information on the arts, and the possibility of attracting more artists and art-lovers to the downtown area.
If you want to participate in this dialogue, Upside Allentown is hosting a public forum on Tuesday, October 20th at 5pm at Miller Symphony Hall.
These events are free for Allentown businesses; $25 for businesses outside of the city limits.
